Stress & Our Hair

klblack90

Entering the new year, you might be thinking about making some changes. Especially to your lifestyle or wellbeing. We're all for this as stress in our bodies can cause all sorts of issues with our hair and skin. When we're stressed, there's an increase of the cortisol hormone within our body. This is what reaks havoc.

Chronic stress can lead onto anxiety, depression, sleep issues, pain and bodily complaints such as muscle tension.

Skin may be affected, extra oil/sebum is produced which leads to clogged pores and breakouts, but also skin may dry out as your skins elasticity and water retension is reduced so its important to stay hydrated. Inflammation can be caused which can lead to breakouts of eczema and psoriasis.

We could suffer a form of alopicia which is related to stress. This type of hair loss can be reversible and not permanent. Also, its true what they say that stress can cause grey hairs.

Exessive cortisol production affects function and cycle regulation of hair follicles. It can force our hair follicle into the resting and further onto the shedding stage which usually happens when our bodies experience trauma from experiences such as birth or surgery. This is our bodies way of telling us that something is wrong.

So we need to listen to our body!

A few things you can do to de-stress and help our wellbeing and mental health are:

Go for a massage, get your nails done or come to see us for a scalp treatment and blow dry

See a therapist

Read a book, do jigsaws, bake or take up a crafty hobby

Meet friends for coffee or lunch

Exercise by walking in nature, swimming or yoga

Eat better and drink plenty of water

Better quality of sleep

Journaling, especially before bed

Mindfulness, consciously look around you and find the positives in life instead of focussing on the negatives

Breathing techniques

Be good to ourselves and our minds, treat them well!
