Hair loss and hair thinning is a regular discussed matter in the salon with our clients. So I thought I'd do some research to discover more about it and hopefully it will help us understand some of the problems we all face with our bodies and hair.
Here's what we discovered;
There's an estimated 13 million women in the UK are living with menopause.
Menopause is most commom in women between the ages of 45-55, however research has shown 1 in 100 women start menopause before the age of 40. Unfortunately it still isn't spoken about enough.
Oestrogen, as we know, is a hormone in the female body that promotes the development and maintenance of female characteristics.
Firstly, we encounter the peri-menopausal stage which is a slight reduction of estrogen in the body and can cause hot flushes and mood swings. You've hit full menopause when you haven't had any menstrual bleeding for 12 months.
A few of the symptoms experienced are common but there are more than we realise;
Low mood and anxiety/depression
Hot flushes
Night sweats
Poor sleep
Muscle and joint aches and pains
Urinary infections
Estrogen contributes to quite a few of our body parts including the brain for body temperature and memory, heart and liver (cholesterol), breasts, ovaries, uterus, bones and hair all over the body.
So when estrogen levels start to lower, all of these areas are affected.
When the levels of estrogen and progesterone start to decrease, it triggers an increase of androgens which is a group of male hormones which can cause hair follicles to shrink and slows down hair growth.
The lack of oestrogen levels are also linked to the hair and skin. While going through the menopause it can cause your hair to become thinner and dryer and also your scalp to become dryer and itchier. If you suffer from dry skin during menopause avoid products that lather, foam or bubble as they strip away your skins natural oils.
What you need is a product that decreases the amount of hair loss and stimulates hair follicles, prolongs hair growth and increases blood flow to the hair, like the Davines Naturaltech Energizing Superactive Serum and Shampoo.
It's stimulating, revitalising, invigorating formula encourages hair growth and reduces the amount of hair loss. Hair that is fragile and prone to falling out due to androgenetic factors and hormone imbalances giving a feeling of energy and well-being to the scalp.
Although, there are natural ways we can increase estrogen levels in our bodies and that's including these foods into our diets;
Fruits - apples, berries, grapes, peaches, pears and plums
Grains - barley, oats and wheat germ
Liquids derived from plants - tea, coffe, red wine, olive oil and beer
Nuts and seeds - almonds, flaxseeds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds
I found this quiet interesting to learn about, let me know if you did too!
